SATURDAY's PHOTO HUNTING - The city where you live

I live in Waterloo, a very famous little town in Belgium because  of "The Battle of Waterloo" which took place near Waterloo on 18 June 1815 between the First French Empire of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Alliance of the Seventh Coalition (the United Kingdom, Prussia, Austria and others), under the main allied commanders, the Duke of Wellington and General von Blücher; Around 34000 soldiers lost their lives on this very bloody battle field.

Waterloo is only 15 km ( 9 miles)far from Brussels

There are several attractions related to the battle

the Roman Catholic Church of St. Joseph, where Wellington is said to have prayed before going into battle and where British and Dutch plaques commemorating the fallen are now to be seen. This church was also the place where the wounded soldiers were brought during the battle and tried to be saved.

Wellington's headquarters are today a  Museum where you can see Wellington's room, his bed and his office and relics, which have been found on the battle field.

Napoleon on the battle field site

The memorial in the form of a statue of a lion (looking towards France) on a hill, with 252 stairs, called La Butte du Lion.

The Battle of Waterloo is one of the greatest battles in European history, both in its size and its consequences. Once a year, many tonics, from around the world, offer a masterful reconstruction of the events of 1815.

The station has never changed since it was built !

but we have a new city hall

Lots of boutiques and the Wellington Gallery

street in Waterloo

and some old houses near the Lion

For the year 2013 the new THEME LIST HERE

Next weeks theme : Show something yellow

Cool visual tour of your city/town Gattina.

As you know, there's a Waterloo Road here in Hong Kong. There's also a Wellington Street with a Wellington Gallery on it... am sure though that it doesn't have the same owner as the Wellington Gallery in Waterloo. :)

There is a Waterloo Street in Singapore!

I wonder if there are any ghost stories with so many men killed during the battle. :P

I LOVE all the buildings! And the costumes. You know since before that I do want to see it all - it's a pity we didn't go there on our last Europe trip, so this was awesome to see some more of it here!

What a great post Gattina. It gave a good tour of Waterloo. As you say one of the most famous battles in history and so many places around the world have squares, streets or towns named after Waterloo or Wellington. In fact I am visiting my friend in Florida later this year who lives in Wellington, Florida.
